The Wrecks Demolish in Concert: St. Louis Photos

— by Carrie Zukoski

On the fourth night of their Finally : OUTSIDE Tour to promote their September album release, OUTSIDE, The Wreck’s Tuesday night concert had die-hard fans at The Pageant in St. Louis clambering for more at the end of their 90-minute set.

But first, opening the night was LA-based, via New York, Kid Sistr. The all-girl indie-rock trio performed 30 minutes of their super fun, alt-rock/pop-punk guitar-driven joyful sounds for the growing crowd. Their fast-paced set included “America Teenage Prophecy” and “Delete Me,” which they prefaced by saying it’s a song about sending nude photos. They also rocked out on their just-released single, “Accelerator.” They’ve been around since 2017 and should be on your one’s to watch list, if they aren’t already.

Second on the bill was Chicago’s Worry Club, who brought their A game with 45 minutes of non-stop Midwest emo post/pop punk rock. From “DEATHBLOW” and “DRNKNG PRBLM” to “Nothin,” the quartet garnered several new fans with their abundant energy and powerful songs. Frontman Chase Walsh joked with the crowd that he comes to St. Louis a couple of times a year to shake his ass. “Do you shake your ass?” he asked while turning his back to the crowd to shake, shake, shake. We can only hope that Worry Club makes their way to St. Louis more often to shake, jump, and rock ’n’ roll.

Finally, The Wrecks, no strangers to St. Louis, took to the stage at about 8:50 p.m. The LA indie-rock pop band, formed in 2015, did not hold back. Boundless energy exuded from the stage to the delight of the mostly early 20-something crowd that boomeranged it right back. With a simple stage setup that included some green astroturf, a few fake ivy vines, and a couch, the lads brought the idea of outside inside. They kicked the night off with fan-favorite, the lively “Freaking Out,” then smoothly transitioned into the sweet “Always, Everytime.” Weaving the new, such as “Split Lip,” with the “older” (that’s not so old), such as “I Love This Part,” worked well, and the fans were singing their hearts out right along with frontman Nick Anderson throughout.

At one point, Anderson (wearing a tongue-in-cheek red shirt emblazoned with the word REX on it), prefaced “Know It All” by saying he’d messed up the lyrics to the newer song twice so far on tour, so he hoped he’d get it right. Immediately, fans tried to figure out how to help him. He wound up making it through the punchy, quirky ditty without messing up. The most avid fans butted up right against the tall stage, making the night more interactive between fans and Anderson, lead guitarist Schmizz, and bassist Aaron Kelley. A quick shout-out to Zendé Murdock, who came in last-minute on the tour and was a beast on the drums. The night ended with a two-song encore that included their fast-paced hit, “Favorite Liar.”

The Wrecks left a wreckage of hearts behind in the best possible way. If you have the opportunity, get yourself to The Wrecks’ Finally : OUTSIDE Tour.
