Freaks on Parade Was a Spectacle for Both the Eyes and the Ears in St. Louis

The Freaks on Parade Tour at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater on Wednesday in Saint Louis was definitely one of those shows that was made to be photographed.

With Orgy, The HU, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie all on the same bill, there was a little bit of everything – and despite it feeling like a million degrees outside, it was such a fun night to shoot.

As photographers, we got the first three songs of Orgy, The HU and Rob Zombie, but only the very first song of Marilyn Manson’s set. Surprisingly, that one song ended up giving me some of my favorite photos of the entire night.

Orgy opened the show and brought a big dose of nostalgia with songs like “Stitches” and “Blue Monday.” Fans seem pretty divided on them during this tour, and while they probably weren’t the strongest set of the night, I still enjoyed hearing those songs live again.

The HU were easily one of my biggest surprises of the night, especially because I had honestly never even heard of them before this concert. Their mix of heavy rock, traditional Mongolian instruments and throat singing is incredible live. You don’t just hear them – you feel them.

“Sad but True,” “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem” were highlights, and they were SO much fun to photograph. I completely understand why so many people have been talking about them on this tour.

Then Marilyn Manson came out, and the whole mood changed. Dark, creepy and exactly what you’d expect from a Manson show. He looked great, sounded strong and honestly reminded me so much of the Manson everyone remembers from years ago.

Hearing “Sweet Dreams” and “The Beautiful People” threw me right back to high school, especially my senior year when “The Beautiful People” first came out. That was definitely one of those moments where I thought, wow, this really takes me back.

And even though we only had one song to photograph him, that one song gave me some of my best images of the whole show. The lighting, makeup and whole look of the set made it really easy to get great photos.

And then there was Rob Zombie. Visually, there was so much going on. Huge screens, crazy horror visuals, lights, monsters, color and nonstop movement.

“More Human Than Human” was another huge throwback for me. That song and the Astro-Creep: 2000 era were such a big part of my high school years, so hearing it live brought me right back all over again. Between Zombie and Manson, I felt like I was back in high school half the night.

Zombie’s set also included “Superbeast,” “Living Dead Girl,” “Thunder Kiss ’65” and “Dragula.”

Fans have been pretty divided about his vocals on this tour, especially with him letting the crowd take some of the lines. But if you go to a Rob Zombie show, there is so much happening that it still makes for a really fun night. The stage, the visuals and all the energy are a huge part of it.
