AC/DC Blew the Roof off The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis Tuesday With a Very Special Guest

The Mighty AC/DC made a long-awaited stop in St. Louis Tuesday for a show at a jam-packed Dome at America’s Center for a show that has never been done anywhere else before.

When AC/DC first announced last November their return to St. Louis as part of their “Power-Up Tour”, it ended the longest drought between shows for the lads from Down Under in the Gateway City at 10 years, last performing at Enterprise Center in 2016. Since they first played Mississippi Nights back in 1977 the band has regularly made St. Louis a regular stop, 14 times in all, hitting St Louis for just about every other tour.

So, the anxiety for a return by one of the biggest, most influential bands in rock history was already huge. Slap on the fact that the band has referenced this tour as “powering up for the last time” has only driven fuel to the rumors that this will be the band’s final hurrah. St. Louisan Taylor Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless were tapped to open on the tour, a great gig for them, and well-received in reviews, but a couple of weeks ago they had to bow out of from her hometown show, leaving a void in the opening slot.

Momsen then phoned up Dave Grohl and asked if the Foo Fighters would like to open the show in their place. Grohl immediately accepted and set the stage for a once in a lifetime event. Never has the Foo Fighters opened for AC/DC, and it made Grohl’s childhood dream come true.

On stage Grohl was as giddy as a schoolboy, gushing about how he couldn’t believe he was up there and promising to rush down to watch AC/DC’s performance from the audience when their show was over.

Crushing a 75-minute set, possibly their shortest non-festival set in 20 years, the Foo’s were on fire. With a set that was raw and unfiltered the band (Guitarist/vocalist Grohl, guitarist Pat Smeer, bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Chris Shiflett, Keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and drummer Ilan Rubin) tore through a set that seemed like only 30 minutes.

Starting with “All My Life” and “The Pretender” the band’s 10-song set was a greatest-hits set that was gifted with extended jam sessions and heightened “pinch-me” energy from the band that felt like they just won the lottery. Grohl talked in between nearly every song about how this was a lifelong dream like he was talking to 55,000 of his closest friends: “bucket list-check!”

When AC/DC hit the stage at 8:45 they stormed out to “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)”, a deep cut from their 1979 album Highway to Hell and the title to their live album of the prior year (only titled “If You Want Blood”) the last with original lead singer Bon Scott.

Vocalist Brian Johnson and company (founding member guitarist Angus Young, guitarist Stevie Young, drummer Matt Laug, and bassist Chris Chaney) tore through a 2 hour and 20-minute set with ease.

Johnson, who is 78, still has the chops for fronting one of the mightiest rock bands ever, and Angus Young at 71 still has more energy than I have in a week.

Young included his trademark skipping and sneer while delivering the riffs that are enthroned in the annals of rock history. He even jumped many times. And while the jumps may be shorter the heart seemed never stronger to rock.

The band roared through epic tracks like “Thunderstruck”, “Back in Black”, and “You Shook Me all Night Long” with energy and youthfulness of lads 20 years their junior and gave their all.

It was epic and for the 55,000 fans in attendance if it was, indeed their last show here then what a way to go out. For Those about to rock, the mighty AC/DC does, indeed, salute you!
