Daniel Donato Dazzled Dedicated St. Louis Fans at The Sovereign

On this cold winter’s night, hundreds of fans braved the frigid St. Louis temps in order to warm up to the nonstop jams Daniel Donato has come to be known for.

What was to be the second night of the Horizons tour wound up being the first as the Cosmic Country band had to cancel their first night due to wintry weather in Tennessee.

With no opener, it was all Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country for the entirety of the night. Kicking off a bit after 8 p.m., the next 3 hours felt akin to a cosmic hootenanny. A swirling mix of roadhouse twang, country, rockabilly, psychedelia, with a dash of Americana tossed in, the band stewed and cooked the sounds to perfection. The dedicated fans (around 700-800) danced, jumped, swayed, hooted, and hollered in deep appreciation throughout the night.

The first set began with an extended (ok, all the songs were extended) version of the first track from his newest album, Horizons, the fast-paced, honky-tonk “Blame the Train” and included covers of Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and Marty Robbins’ “Big Iron.”

The second set, still ablaze with trippy, laser lighting, kicked off with Donato doing what he does with his fine fingering on his Telecaster, on “Forgotten Days” and slid into “Double Exposure.” The night ended with a cover of “Samson & Delilah” that he dedicated to the late Bob Weir.

The three hours flew by for the crowd who are, most likely, still reveling in the night’s festivities the following day.
