Incubus Was Solid at Chaifetz Arena Thursday in St. Louis

Incubus made a stop in St. Louis on Thursday for their Morning View Tour to celebrate the 24^th anniversary of their 2001 hit album Morning View. Performing at Chaifetz Arena on the St. Louis University Campus the band showed that after over 30 years they can still captivate an audience.

Personally, this was a must see show for me. I have been a fan for nearly 30 years, ever since I heard “New Skin” from their S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album, they have been a large influence on my during my high school years and beyond.

The lighting played a very large part of the show, alternating from dark and moody when the songs were slower to a more hectic flashing for the more up-tempo songs.

The mood was further captured with the use of 4 large video screens and the band (vocalist Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, drummer Jose Pasillas, bassist Nicole Row, and Chris Kilmore on turntables/keyboards) sounded exceptionally well.

In the concert photography world we are generally given the industry standard first 3 songs to capture our images. For this show it was song 4, 5, and 6, the latter, “Blood on the Ground”, was done acoustically and set up next to the drums.

Overall, the atmosphere seemed pretty chill and laid back, a nice respite from the hectic lives outside the Chaitetz walls.

Incubus performed their 2001 multi-platinum album Morning View in its entirety, while throwing in a few treats. “Are You In?” transitioned nicely into the Phil Collins classic “In the Air Tonight” as an outro. Then they used Rihanna’s “Umbrella” as an intro which morphed into “Under My Umbrella”.

After the Morning View set they played 7 of their “hits” which included “Megalomaniac”, “Vitamin” (Their only song from S.C.I.E.N.C.E.), and ended with their hit “Drive”. Brandon Boyd didn’t speak much during the set, maybe three time total, instead he let the songs speak for themselves.

Paris Jackson, who is the only daughter to Michael Jackson, opened the show. She came out and simply stated “Gonna sing some sad songs”. And under a solitary spotlight she sat down and did, indeed, perform some sad songs.

Mike from incubus came out to provide some additional guitar work for “Gaslight”. Her set was short, only 6 songs, but had a nice cozy feel to her set.

Manchester Orchestra was a totally different vibe than Jackson. They had lots of energy (even when the songs were slower), lots of smoke, leg kicks, and overall higher intensity which was bathed throughout in a dark, red/orange lighting. (Though not great for us photographers)
