Three Days Grace Brought their Alienation Tour to Indianapolis Wednesday, and proceeded to heal old wounds. How, you ask.

Let’s take it back to 2006. You had a rough day at school. Your parents got in a fight the night before. Your crush doesn’t seem to know you exist; you got a D- on the math test you forgot was that day, and the cherry on top?

Your best friend isn’t speaking with you. The worst! You get on the school bus and find an empty seat near the back where you can look out the window and decompress. You pull out your iPod classic, out of your backpack, and untangle the chaos of wires that your earbuds always seem to create.

You scroll through your assortment of odd Lime Wire file names to find the song that just seems to meet you where you’re at. One of the albums you landed on was probably One X by Three Days Grace. Which song made you feel just a little more seen during that time?

That is exactly what Three Day’s Grace brought to Indianapolis on Wednesday, November 4th. Nearly two decades later, the band is aware just how deeply their music has resonated with their fanbase over the years. Their music has been a soundtrack to growing up, navigating difficult life challenges, and finding comfort that maybe someone understands.

Before Three Days Grace had the chance to take fans down memory lane, the evening kicked off with two high-energy, powerhouse acts Funeral Portrait and I Prevail. Funeral Portrait was first up, and the energy was contagious. Vocalist, Lee Jennings, brought unmistakable stage presence along with vibrant green hair and rhinestones shimmering beneath the stage lights. Members of the band played off each other with theatrical flair.

Beyond the theatrics, Jennings took a moment to vulnerably share some struggles in the music industry. He spoke about the pressures surrounding physical appearance and expectations some record labels placed on him to look a certain way. It can be frustrating for musicians to feel boxed into certain standards based off looks rather than musical ability. It reminds the audience that behind the music and stage personas, are human beings who face their own struggles to be accepted for who they are.

Next up was I Prevail, and their set was on FIRE. Literally! Insane energy, heavy vocals, and lots of pyro. The set was led by vocalist Eric Vanlerberghe, who commanded the stage. The band smoothly transitioned between heavy screams and melodic verses. The performance was relentless keeping audience engagement the entire performance. As soon as, Violent Nature sounded throughout the arena, the crowd went feral.

Fans dressed in Banana and Apple suits collided in the mosh pit. I Prevail’s set is one that sticks with you long after you have left the concert.

After two powerhouse opening performances, Three Days Grace took the stage. One of the most exciting aspects of the current lineup is the return of original vocalist Adam Gontier, who now shares the microphone with Matt Walst. Watching the two frontmen interact throughout the evening was a highlight in itself. Rather than competing for the spotlight, the singers continuously hyped each other up, traded vocal parts, and fed off one another’s energy. Their chemistry brought an entirely new dynamic to the performance while celebrating the different eras of Three Days Grace, honoring both eras of the band.

It was so wholesome to see fans holding hands and clearing away tears as the opening notes of familiar favorites filled the arena. Songs that once played through bedroom speakers, car stereos, and those very same iPods were now being shouted back by thousands of fans. You could look around and see people singing at the top of their lungs, as memories from nearly two decades ago came rushing back. Graphics from the albums served as a backdrop for each track performed.

There is something incredibly special about hearing a song live that once helped you through a difficult chapter of your life. Suddenly, you’re not just remembering the lyrics; you’re remembering where you were, who you were, and everything you experienced along the way. For some fans, these songs represented much more. Several fans were heard saying, “That just healed my childhood.” After a classic track was performed.

With Adam Gontier and Matt Walst sharing the stage, Three Days Grace delivered a performance that bridged generations of fans and brought two chapters of the band’s history together. It was a reminder that while time moves forward, the music that shaped us never really leaves us.
