Dogstar Rocked The Factory Thursday in St. Louis

Alternative rock trio Dogstar stopped by St. Louis for a show at The Factory on Thursday and delivered a steady and solid performance.

The grunge laden trio consisting of vocalist/guitarist Bret Domrose, drummer Robert Mailhouse, and bassist Keanu Reeves (yes, THAT Keanu Reeves), is on tour in support of their 4th full-length album, All In Now.

Make no mistake, this isn’t some vanity project but a real band putting out good music who just happens to have a global superstar actor as their bassist. Reeves, to his credit, stays in the background, so to speak, allowing Domrose to take all of the focus as the lead of the group.

They came out rocking from the start with “Siren”, from All In Now. In fact, 12 of their 19-song setlist were taken from their new album, encompassing the album’s theme of living in the moment. sure, they played a few older songs, but the vast majority were songs from the last 2 albums, since they re-united in 2020.

With a simple setup of lighted curtains backdropping a minimalist, no-frills stage setting the message was clear: focus on the music, not us. With thought-provoking songs that stand out so well, like “All In Now”, “Math”, “joy”, and “This Sphere” it is easier to focus on the music.

Domrose’s heavy/gritty riffs and dynamic vocals were seeded by Reeve’s solidly heavy bass complimenting Mailhouse’s punchy/thunderous drums. Together they have created a recipe for a solid structural sound that is absolutely jam-worthy.

The Factory is a definite step up in venue size from their last performance here in 2023 at The Hawthorne. Domrose commented on the step up and hinted that the next time could even be a bigger venue.

I saw fans of all ages in the crowd, not just 20 to 50-year-olds jamming out. Older fans as well as kids were enjoying the show. However, to the parents of the little girl (probably 1 or 2 years old) I have one thing to say: PUT SOME HEARING PROTECTION ON THE CHILD OR LEAVE HER AT HOME! Holy crap, if you want to chance it with your own ears, fine. But a child’s ears are much more delicate than yours. I feel sorry for her as she ages and has hearing loss or at best, some really annoying tinnitus, because I have a feeling this isn’t the first time that has happened and probably won’t be the last.
