Muse’s Dynamic The Wow! Signal Tour Lit Up the Night at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater

“Plug In Baby,” “Time Is Running Out” to get in on the rest of Muse’s 26-city North America summer The Wow! Signal tour, supporting their just-released 10th studio album of the same name.

The multi-award-winning English rockers, Muse, brought their spectacular concert, replete with confetti cannons, to Hollywood Casino Amphitheater on the outskirts of St. Louis on the second night of their tour to the delight of fans, many of whom swooned in anticipation long before the trio took the headlining slot.

But before they appeared on the superbly styled stage that included a short catwalk, the bands The Temper Trap and Bloc Party helped set the mood.

The now London-based via Australia band The Temper Trap took the opening slot with 30-minutes of their infectious indie-pop rock to support their July album release, Sungazer. Perhaps best known for their dreamy, catchy, bouncy “Sweet Disposition,” they leaned into songs from the upcoming fourth studio album that included “Lucky Dimes,” “Into the Wild,” and “Giving Up Air,” all of which brought forth an airy, punchy, divine driving energy that flows with Dougy Mandagi’s ethereal vocals.

London-based Bloc Party kept the energy up with 40-minutes of their post-punk//indie/art/dance rock for the growing crowd. To this concert photographer’s ears, they sounded a bit like The English Beat (or simply The Beat in England) if you added some post-punk Britrock to the mix. The band came out strong, featuring the heavy bass riff-laden new song “Coming On Strong,” to the grungier, raw “So He Begins to Lie,” to the Ska-driven “Banquet.”

After a brief delay that could have been weather-related as dark, ominous clouds loomed on the western edge of the venue (but also brought a wonderful coolness that this region hasn’t seen after a week of extreme heat warnings), Muse began their 110-minute powerful concert a little after 9 p.m., and the crowd immediately swelled closer to the stage. Matt Bellamy sauntered straight out the catwalk while laser hexagons played overhead during the opening prog-rock, cosmic “Hexagons” from their new album. Each member donned their own version of a black and red jumpsuit (as seen in the music video for “Cryogen”) that added to the visually stunning show.

From fan favorites including, the fast-paced, explosive, “Hysteria,” the synth-pop, driving rock of “Map of the Problematique,” and the simple, upbeat “Starlight” to newer material that included the melodic, sweet “Be With You” and the rhythmic, high-energy, danceable “Nightshift Superstar,” Muse showcased their range throughout the night and ended, appropriately, with the futuristic, anthemic “Take A Bow.”

If there were people in the crowd who weren’t necessarily fans prior to this concert, there’s not a chance they left in the same state. “The Algorithm” to an undeniable good time is simple: show up to Muse’s The Wow! Signal Tour and let the music in—transcending your normal day into an unforgettable one.
