Mac Saturn is Sensational in Concert

— by Carrie Zukoski

A couple of years ago, Mac Saturn went through some trials and tribulations. The young Detroit sultry, swaggering, groovy rockers were on the precipice to set the world on fire. A sudden blow hit them hard and their future became uncertain. But now? They pushed through and are back to touring — sounding strong and having a blast on stage.

Their Bound South tour is about to come to a close before they traverse to other parts of the country (and world), but not before a stop through St. Louis on this Tuesday night at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room. The small room with the low stage meant an up close and in your face fun, funky, grooving good time that flowed back and forth between the band members and the fans.

But first on the bill was a 30-minute set from St. Louis’ Feed the Masses. Formed about three years ago, the members, now in their mid-20s, have been playing since high school. Billed as an indie/alt rock band, Lance (singer/keys), Kaleb (drums), Jason (guitar), and sitting in on this night, Blake on bass, their sound wafted from soft and dreamy, with a hint of The Verve influence on “Neverland” and “Space Suit” to the newly-released, delicate “Grey Skies.”

The members of Mac Saturn — Carson (frontman/main vocals), Mike (guitar), Nick (guitar), Ian (bass), and Angelo (drums), strolled onto stage a little before 9 p.m. to a crowd that had filled out nicely and immediately got down to the business of ensuring everyone in the room was grooving along to their ’70s-inspired rock/glam/funk mixture. The 80-minute rollicking performance was fairly split with newer songs mixed in with fan-favorites such as the swirly, Stones’-inspired “Plain Clothes Man,” to the driving, rocking “Get on the Phone,” and the highly danceable “Mr. Cadillac.”  Newer songs included the punchy “Cash on Delivery,” the slower “White Walls,” and the classic rock-esque “Easy.”

While the crowd would have boogied to their sound into the wee hours of the night, the lads brought it to a close with an animated all-out rendition of the funky, poppy “Junkie.”

Many fans echoed the same sentiment that they were happy to see Mac Saturn back at it, strong and sounding fabulous on stage.
