Easy Honey Flows Like Gold During Their St. Louis Concert
— by Carrie Zukoski
Their first time in St. Louis, Easy Honey, the North Carolina alt/indie/East-Coast surf rock band formed in 2017, headlined in front of an intimate crowd on a Tuesday night at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room.
The 4-piece band made up of college pals Selby Austin (guitar), Darby McGlone (guitar), Charlie Holt (drums), and Webster Austin (bass), with each one contributing lead and/or backing vocals throughout the night, is currently on tour to support their new EP, Plaid, slated to come out at the end of April.

Their hour-long set included easy, cheerful tunes such as “Catching Lightning, ”Orbiter,” and “Copenhagen.” The songs lift you up and bring you along, tenderly guiding you through a warm, golden summer day while gliding through on a gentle breeze. They also performed several songs from their upcoming EP, such as “Everything I See” and the harmonic “Basement Kissing.” These two songs brought a bit more buzzy, jingle jangle to their carefree sound. They also showed off some funky, groovy jams in “Far Out” that they drove home amid some floaty swirls while never leaving the original groove behind.
This small basement bar/venue has seen plenty of acts during its years that have gone on to become the next big thing, and Easy Honey is on that trajectory as they’re set to perform at Lollapalooza this summer in Chicago. This concert photographer wonders if they learned that Alex Chilton of Big Star—one of their influences—once played this room when it was configured a bit differently and owned by the former Cicero’s restaurant?
Opening the night was St. Louisan Zach Wexelman, who performs under the moniker Real Topeka People. His half-hour set was simply him singing, playing guitar, and using a MIDI foot controller to toggle effects from his computer. Known as a music producer, Wexelman also teaches others how to mix music, and from his set, on this night, he knows what he’s doing. His sound is an eclectic mix of ’60s and ‘80s soul and R&B, while blending in pop, folk, and a little hip hop. His smoky vocals wrapped around you and pulled you in on songs such as “Fool For Ya.” “Do It Again” proved to be a powerful, power-pop, catchy tune you’ll want to put on repeat. He also performed the sweet melody, “STL,” an homage to his hometown.
It was a sweet way to spend a Tuesday night in St. Louis. Be sure to keep your ears peeled for Easy Honey, you won’t be disappointed.
