Nothing More’s St. Louis Concert Was Nothing Less Than Stellar

— by Carrie Zukoski

Nothing More is wrapping up their CARNAL Nature World Tour in support of their 2024 album release Carnal. And they brought along a few friends on this leg that included Catch Your Breath, Archers, and Doobie. Yep, four bands. And their stop in St. Louis landed on a Monday. A tough night to go out was made even tougher due to a sudden drop in temperatures that clocked in at a feels-like 7º Fahrenheit. But fans prevailed and showed up hungry for this sold-out, power-punched, raw night of heavy rock at The Pageant.

First up: Doobie. This Columbus, Ohio native, who once went by the name Eric Williams, gained attention in 2017 on YouTube with his blending of hip-hop and rock stylings. Doobie, along with St. Louis’ own Zach Allard on drums, Jon Suh on guitar, Max Miller on guitar, and Hylyte on the ones and twos, set the pace for the night with a gritty, intense, and meaningful 30 minutes. Doobie shared that he aims to be authentic and ended the too-short set with piercing, emotional “Beauty in the Boogeyman” that’s about his struggles with addiction.

Next up, Madison, Wisconsin’s heavy metal Archers, who came on the scene in 2015, dialed up the energy for the growing crowd with their metalcore sound and energy. Early on, frontman Nathanael Pulley noted, “There’s the St. Louis I love,” after the crowd surfing started. Newly signed to Fearless Records, the lads included their new single, the hard-hitting, acute, melodic-tinged “The Dirt” into their 30-minute on stage.

After a brief break, the Austin-based hard rockers who have been going at it for about nine years now, Catch Your Breath strode onto the darkened stage, which once lit up, led to 40-minutes of an intense mix of fast-paced, heavy-hitting, blistering, yet stylized songs that engulfed the now capacity crowd. They included their hit, “Dial Tone,” as well as their new single, “Lost.” Lead vocalist Josh thanked everyone for coming out to support live music.

And finally, three-time Grammy-nominated Nothing More hit the stage at 9:30 p.m. and did not let up for the next 90-minutes in what can only be described as raw, explosive energy that fueled their set. This San Antonio hard/heavy rock/alt metal band has been going at it since 2003 (now more than half of frontman Jonny Hawkin’s life) and has garnered a devoted following. Although several in the crowd hadn’t witnessed a Nothing More dynamic concert before, Hawkins kindly stated, “Welcome to the family.” Bathed mostly in orange hues throughout, the band incorporated several songs from Carnal into the night, including the combustible, heavy “HOUSE ON SAND” and the softer “FREEFALL,” which Archer’s Pulley joined on stage for.  During the high-energy drum/guitar/bass solo section of the night, what’s been dubbed the drumtron/bassinator contraption made an appearance with guitarist Mark Vollelunga, bassist Daniel Oliver, and Hawkins all simultaneously playing it at one point. They then polled the audience on which song they wanted Nothing More to perform next, with a raunchy cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “We’re in This Together” winning out. The night ended with the band’s breakthrough hit “This Is The Time,” which careens between heavy hardcore and rock anthem. The experience of seeing Nothing More live will cement them in one’s heart forever.

As the winter wind whipped around outside The Pageant, the fervor from the concert still burned within fans, keeping them glowing on their way home.
