Friday night was “Kids’ Night” at the Fabulous Fox and the opening night of STOMP’s St. Louis run. As guests lined up to enter the theatre, they were greeted by Jennings Senior High School’s J-Funk Drumline and U City High School’s Unstoppable U Step Team. There were many other events inside for the attending kiddos, including a chance to win tickets for Spamalot coming in May.

STOMP has been a worldwide phenomenon since the 1990s, captivating audiences with a mix of percussion, dance, and mime/clown work. Performers use a variety of objects to create innovative sound throughout the show… with the most iconic probably being metal trash-can lids, but even the smallest matchbox drew the rapt attention of the crowd.

The immense skill of these performers cannot be understated. The mixture of skills needed, along with the concentration for timing and collaboration for a grueling, non-stop hour and forty-five minutes was beyond impressive. The only time they gave away how tiring the performance was had come at the very end when they collapsed on the stage to thunderous applause.

STOMP was a limited time engagement, running only through the weekend but the show has multiple filmed performances, including a collaboration with Sesame Street called “Let’s Make Music.” Get prepared for another 90s classic, Beetlejuice: the Musical, the Musical, the Musical, coming late April.
