Magic City Hippies Brought the Miami Heat to St. Louis’ Duck Room in February

By the time Magic City Hippies hit the stage at 9:15 p.m. in Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room in St. Louis, the venue was sold out—packed shoulder-to-shoulder with mostly 20-somethings. Being smooshed from front to back and side to side did not deter fans from grooving and swaying to the blended elements of rhythmic funk/indie/surf/dance sounds that this Miami-based band brings.

But first, Brooklyn-based Supertaste raised the heat in the room to a growing crowd on this February Tuesday night. The trio (with the addition of a drummer on the tour) — squeezed onto the stage outfitted for both bands, and performed a 45-minute set full of high-energy, funk, groove, trance, and synth-laden dance tunes that included “In Your Head” and “Shot in the Dark,” which set the tone for the night perfectly. Lead singer, Zach Britt, noted it was their first time in St. Louis and they had no idea what to expect, but were blown away by the positive vibes flowing from the accepting crowd.

 

Less than halfway through their winter tour and after a nine-day break to regroup, frontman Robby Hunter shared Magic City Hippies were refreshed and ready to party. He stated, “If you push us, we’ll go harder,” which was met with resounding cheers. And the act, that’s been playing out since 2011 in one formation or another (on this night it included six members), cranked up the energy to perform hits such as the grooving “BRNT,” “Fanfare,” and the electric, bouncy “I Can’t Let You Go.” The already warm room nearly overheated by the time Magic City Hippies concluded their 90-minute eclectic set, which no one seemed to mind.
