“The Backyard” Brings New Experience to Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis

Each year the operators at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis try to add something new in an effort to attract new concertgoers, and to enhance the experience of those going to live shows. The newest addition is called “The Backyard”, billed as a summer hangout filled with fun, food, and an extra energy designed specifically for the fans.

We checked it out last week and had a great time enjoying an excellent barbecue, refreshing cold beverages, GOOD music in the background, and plenty of games to play.  It was a really memorable time in The Backyard … followed by an amazing live concert headlined by the Lumineers.

In fact, if you thought I was describing a backyard barbecue with all of the fringe benefits, then you would be correct.  The best part is that all of this comfort takes place at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in a space literally called “The Backyard”. The venue just opened up to the public and this was their sixth show of pre and post-concert magic. Only a few weeks old and already the space is running like a well-oiled machine. The minute we walked into the Grand Entrance, we felt welcomed home by the friendly waitstaff and managers.

 

There is a grassy area with plenty of seating that emulates a backyard with a beautiful country style silo shaped grill area close to the entrance where you can sit at the counter and watch the Chef do his magic with veggies, chicken and beef.

 

There are two vintage pickup trucks around to continue giving visitors a homey retro feel. You can sit in the bed of one of the trucks on a padded mattress to watch television and listen to music while enjoying your snacks and drinks.  A DJ works out of the back of the other truck. He presented music that fit in perfectly with the headlining bands style of music and management said in the future, they may have live musicians play in the space.  Near the DJ, folks can sit on a truck’s bench seat in front of a wall of license plates naming many of the acts who have performed at this incredible venue over the years. It’s the perfect spot to shoot a few pre-concert photos to post.

We were tempted to order food and beverages while sitting on the comfortable patio furniture and of course, we gave in.  There’s a range of options: snacky appetizers, substantial sandwiches and enticing desserts. We highly recommend the mac & cheese bites, chicken sandwich, and the sweet, refreshing ice cream and cookies.  Obviously, we couldn’t try it all, but we’re hoping to sample more of the menu on our next visit.  There are lots of varieties of drinks, non-alcoholic and alcoholic, to choose from and even complimentary chillers of plain and flavored water.

 

Just like any backyard gathering, there are lots of games and activities around as well as great food and drinks. You can play Jenga, Bags, or Jumbo Connect 4, great for kids of all ages.  There are inviting covered seating areas with cushions and room for your whole party as well as comfortable patio furniture including Adirondack chairs for watching the concert live on a high-definition big screen television if you feel like you just can’t leave “The Backyard”.  Your wristband gives you access to come and go throughout the night.

 

At the end of the concert “The Backyard” is still playing music for those who want to stop in and enjoy the air-conditioned restrooms (Yes, you read that right), a late-night snack, or just have a drink and chill while the traffic empties from the parking lot.  With all of these amenities, we’re sure to be partying there again.
