Hello Midwest Rewind family, I trust you all have been well! Keith here to dive into the three act show that took place at The Enterprise Center on 11/01/22. Those three acts; Poppy, Jane’s Addiction and The Smashing Pumpkins. So, let’s dig in, shall we?

First to take the stage was Poppy. Now, I always want to be honest with my audience and accurately review events so with that in mind, Poppy’s performance was the only negative aspect of the evening. It is hard to watch a performer show up with such a lack of energy and concern for their performance. Poppy lacked stage presence and was overall underwhelming. I felt sorry for the musicians in support of her as they looked like they wanted to be anywhere else in the world but at this show. On a positive note, at least their set was short and took place as the venue was still in process of filling in.

As the venue filled the crowd was in anticipation for Jane’s Addiction. It has been quite some time since Perry Farrell and the crew has taken on a tour, so it was with bated breath that most waited. There were already rumors of Perrys voice not being strong and ready, and the fact that Dave Navarro was home nursing covid made for a good bit of concern and speculation. All these concerns went away immediately from the first note of the set.

Perry sounded amazing and while Dave was certainly missed the band (guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen filling in, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins) sounded absolutely spot on. The set was nothing but one amazing moment into another and the crowd very loudly approved of them all.

“Jane Says” and “Been Caught Stealing” were absolute highlights for me but there was not one weak moment in their set. A set so strong that The Pumpkins had their work cut out for them to follow.

As any Smashing Pumpkins show will go the stage was dark and moody with some amazing visuals on display to whet the appetite of the crowd. When Billy Corgan and the band took the stage under semi darkness the crowd erupted and never looked back. Every person I could see in the floor seats were on their feet and they never sat down. Corgan sounded amazing during this set; everything strong and concise and discernable. A true powerhouse performance from one of music’s most iconic voices.

The band (bassist Jack Bates, keyboardist Katie Cole, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, and guitarist Jeff Schroeder) was absolutely in tow with Corgan, never missing a beat or a note providing the rest of the aspects of a magical performance and arguably the best I have seen them live. It was a fully immersive treat for all in attendance.

Corgan extended his gratitude and appreciation to the crowd for supporting The Smashing Pumpkins for 34 years. Highlights of the set were numerous, but my personal favorite moments were the acoustic performance of “Tonight, Tonight” and the absolute full throttle performances of “Cherub Rock” and “Zero”.

If this tour comes your way, I highly recommend checking it out, Jane’s Addiction and The Smashing Pumpkins are still a joy to behold.
