Eivør’s St. Louis Concert at The Sovereign Exceeded Expectations
— by Carrie Zukoski
Two words: Simply gorgeous. That’s it. That’s all you need to know about seeing Eivør in concert. From the lighting to the ethereal atmosphere and sound, every detail made Friday night’s concert at The Sovereign in St. Louis outstanding.
If you’ve stumbled across this meager write-up and have no idea who Eivør is, this humble concert photographer pleads with you to seek out her music now, no matter your taste. The same can be said for the opening act, midori jaeger.
On the second night on tour with Eivør, London-based midori jaeger softly strolled onto the nearly bare stage promptly at 8 p.m., picked up her cello, sat on her chair, and began her all too-short 30-minute set of airy, lustrous vocals accompanied by the deep, bass grooves and rhythmic plucking of the cello. She often paused to share a detail or two about a song, joke with the crowd, and let the rapt audience know it was her first time in St. Louis. Songs included the breathtaking “safe” and slightly post-bossa nova “planted.”
Faroese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Eivør and backing band also made their way to St. Louis for the first time about halfway through their North American tour to support the October 16 release of Eivør’s new studio album, Tungl, which means moon in Faroese. Eivør is regarded as “one of the most bewitching and fearless voices to have emerged from the Nordic music scene.”

With moody lighting throughout the 90-plus-minute concert, Eivør, dressed in an all-black, long, lacy, gothic-inspired Victorian dress, with her long, thick blond hair sharply pulled back in two ponytails, entranced fans throughout the night. She included several new songs from Tungl such as “Healer” and “Eon,” both sung in English and what I can only describe as Enya meets Kate Bush meets the transcendent, otherworldly depths of the underground. Eviør took time to connect with fans, stating that her first impression of St. Louis was that “there’s nothing here,” but that quickly changed when they began to poke around and found it’s “full of magic in every corner.” She also shared that they wanted eggs for breakfast and they were directed to Egg, and that she found the best coffee she’s had in years here and now has a suitcase full to take home. Other songs included “Boxes,” that’s about letting it go, and another new song, “Spøkilsir,” that’s about the ghosts we carry around. The spectacular concert ended with the lush and longing “Falling Free.”
Simply go. Another two words imploring you to find a city near you between now and November 22 on the remaining dates of Eivør’s North American tour.
