So you see yet another five star rating for an El Monstero and I can almost hear you; “Yeah, yeah Keith, we all know you love El Monstero.” Before you dismiss this review so quickly, you may be interested in knowing that for this show there were two five star performances. Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre hosted yet another nearly sold out show this past Saturday, August 11, 2018, Monsters and Mummies.

If you live anywhere near Saint Louis you have almost certainly heard of or have attended an El Monstero Show to hear the music of Pink Floyd fashioned in one of the best tribute shows around, if not the best. But opening the evening for the home grown sons of Floyd lore was a band from Nashville, Tennessee that, I promise you, will blow your mind the first time you see them. Here Come the Mummies, yes I said mummies and yes, they are dressed as such. I had never been treated to the greatness that was imminent but I assure you if this band is anywhere near me in the future I will do all I can to attend their performance.

Here Come the mummies took the stage by first marching through the crowd en route to a stage right entry, in full costume and full of vigor. The band is a funk, rock fusion group that makes you dance, groove and just have a damn good time. The tunes are original offerings laden with innuendo and humor backed by one of the most talented group of performers you could ever imagine. The music is tight and groovy and the band members are entertaining as all get out, every last one of them. To choose a highlight from their set is impossible, but I do remember being particularly impressed by seeing the two horn players each play two saxophones at on time. To be more clear that was two men and four saxophones, played perfectly at the same time.

El Monstero took the stage shortly after nightfall to a monsterous ovation as fans of all ages erupted in applause. The appreciation that Saint Louis has for this homegrown gem is truly something to behold. There are a few thing that St. Louisans proudly lay claim to, the STL Cardinals, The Gateway Arch, The Urge, Toasted Ravioli and El Monstero. This fall will mark twenty years of the spectacle we all know and love; from humble beginnings to selling out amphitheatres, a truly amazing achievement. To say that these guys deliver every single time they hit the stage would be an understatement, it’s beyond powerful without fail. I could sit here and try to explain to you the quality of the tribute, but that would be a futile endeavor; fact is you really need to see it all to understand it.

I have to say that if you are a Pink Floyd fan and have not yet watched this show, you really should be ashamed of yourself. Both of these groups are so different and yet an entirely complementary pairing, I cannot explain why, I just know that they are. These two groups together made for what may have been my favorite concert of the year, and that is saying something with the shows we have be privileged to have this year. Take my word for it friends, go see both of these bands while you can. I promise you will not be dissapointed.

Peace,

Keith
