Country superstar Miranda Lambert leaves nothing behind at her shows, and Friday night in Saint Louis was no exception.

Lambert has played several venues in the Saint Louis area, mostly at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, but she had never performed at the Scottrade Center downtown, until Friday night, performing to a very large crowd with a simple set devoid from large distractions. Only five large rectangular screens to showcase videos, photos, and live angles from the show for those in the back of the large arena, left only a few minor props on stage, but nothing to get in the way of the music.

Lambert was focused and determined to put on a show filled with emotions. “I want you to feel happy, sad, and really pissed off” Lambert stated. Her song selection did just that.

Kicking off with the John Prine penned “That’s the Way That the World Goes ‘Round”, “Keosene”, and “Highway Vagabond” Lambert established the theme for the night early.

She is still touring in support of her latest record The Weight of These Things, which was released in November of 2106 but has so much material (24 songs) that it is still going strong. It is her second tour in support of the album, this one entitled “Livin’ Like Hippies Tour” As Lambert said: 2015 was a really shitty year for me, but it provided lots of material for some good country songs.” Yes it did.

The songs went back and forth from high energy songs that touched on female empowerment like “Mama’s Broken Heart”, “Keosene”, and “Gunpowder & Lead” to tear jerking ballads like “The House That Built Me”. I must say that I did tear up during “Over You” as it brought back still fresh memories of my best friend (my dog Keegan), and yes, I know the song is not about a dog but it is what I relate it to, and they were good tears.

Prior to the shows on her tour Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation takes donations of pet food, toys, beds, etc to that they can help local shelters with the supplies they need to take care of a sheltered animal until someone can come adopt the pet and give them a forever home. Even through it was raining before the show there was a pretty large amount of donations given that evening.

Throughout the show her band was tight and Lambert’s voice was a strong as ever, and she still reminds me of a young Dolly Parton, especially on “All Kinds of Kinds”. Lambert’s pink frills on the arms of her balck shirt further reminded me of something Parton would wear at one of her shows.

During “Pink Sunglasses” a young fan in the front handed her a ginormous pair of, you guessed it, pink sunglasses, complete with sparkles, glitter and stickers. Lambert wore them much to the approval of the large crowd for a good portion of the song. Elton John eat your heart out.

Jon Pardi performed in support with a nearly hour long set. He joked about a lot of things including his tall frame (6’4”) and remarked how if he had his own stage he would interact with the crowd more without having to basically get down on his knees.

Opening the show was Ashley McBryde who played a swift 20 minute set with a spunky attitude and great voice for a set that was far too short in length.
